Organizing Summer Essentials in the Car

The difference in weather between winter and summer can be pretty extreme, and each one requires a different set of essentials. I find it can be very helpful to have a Summer Tote and a Winter Tote for the car. Being prepared for a sudden change of plans or a sudden change in the weather can make all the difference in a family outing! Here are our summer essentials for the car:

Having grown up in the Disney era, I love great kids movies and the experience of going to the theatre, but I wish moviemakers made more “G” rated movies. We have to deal with what we have and sometimes, it’s not so good.  When do you say, “yes”?

Every parent has to decide what kinds of movies they want their kids to watch. Your family is unique and you have to estimate what behaviors and words your child will be exposed to, and then live with the consequences.

The same 2 movies are shown at the same time on Tuesday and Wednesday of each week and you pick the one you want to see. Friday, June 21 - Family Hike

Paris Mountain State Park will offer family hikes on most Fridays and some Wednesdays at 10 a.m. this summer.
The Creek Ranger hike is a 1-mile, ranger-led walk to Mountain Creek and back, searching for animals and their homes.  Participants wade into the creek, and use a net to find animals that live there!  A closer look under a microscope and water-quality assessment will follow in the park lab. Participants should bring water shoes if they have them.  The park has some available if needed.
Dates: 6/7, 6/21, 7/12, 7/19, 8/9, 8/16. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

The Friends of Paris Mountain State Park will host a program at 10 a.m. by Greenville County Schools Educator Kyle Rollins, called, “Carnivorous Plants.”  Carnivorous Plants grow throughout South Carolina from the mountains to the coast.  Join us as we discover the unique and wonderful world of carnivorous plants in South Carolina! Identification, trapping techniques, and habitats of these wonders of nature will be covered, in addition to live specimens to study!

Saturday, June 22 - 4th Saturday Program at Paris Mountain-Ribbit! Frogs and Toads of Paris Mountain.

Interpretive Ranger Cathy Taylor will present a program at 1 p.m. entitled, Ribbit!  Frogs and Toads of Paris Mountain.  Plunge into the world of frogs and other amphibians that call Paris Mountain home.  Participants start in the park lab with real examples, and learn how to identify frogs and toads of the area by sight and sound. Afterward, practice searching for them around Lake Placid and nearby wetlands, and find out what scientists are doing locally to keep tabs on these amazing creatures. Helpful handouts provided.

Friday, June 28 - Turtle Trail Naturalist Hike

The Turtle Trail Naturalist hike is a 1-mile ranger-accompanied walk on the Turtle Trail, offered on 4th Fridays this summer.  Participants will practice the skills of a naturalist, looking for 10 natural items on their list.  Program will finish in the park lab, looking at some of the items found, with the aid of field guides and a microscope.

Start with inexpensive plain white shoes, add some creativity from your kids, and voila - you have a pair of unique shoes that double as a work of art!

Simple and delicious birthday cake!

We have ice cream cake every year for my daughter's June birthday. It is always a big hit at her annual pool party. This year, we did something different: we made it ourselves. It definitely cost less and it was easy to prepare. With my mother-in-law's fancy handwriting, we customized the top decoration to fit the party's theme and my daughter's current interests. The result: pure deliciousness!
